Love waking up with a fresh pile of market share statistics alongside your morning coffee? If you’re nodding your head in agreement, then today’s your lucky day. Research firm comScore has released its latest report on the state of the smartphone market in the U.S., giving us an idea of how widely-adopted each of the major mobile platforms and manufacturers were during the three-month survey period that ran from June through September.
On the platform side of things, Android was once again king of the mobile mountain, finishing the survey period with a market share of 51.8 percent. Apple’s iOS came in second place with a 40.6 percent share, meaning that there’s not many pockets left for other platforms to claim. BlackBerry ended the survey period with a market share of 3.8 percent, dropping 0.6 percent during those three months, while Microsoft grew to a 3.3 percent share and Symbian held steady at 0.3 percent.
Meanwhile, the manufacturer market share chart doesn’t look all that different. Apple finished the the three-month survey period with a market share of 40.6 percent in the U.S. as Samsung grew 1.2 percent to finish with a 24.9 percent share. Beneath Samsung is HTC, Motorola and LG in a fight for the remaining U.S. market share. HTC dropped 1.4 percent during comScore’s survey to finish with 7.1 percent, while Motorola and LG are nipping at its heels with shares of 6.8 percent and 6.6 percent, respectively.
There’s nothing terribly shocking revealed by comScore’s latest round of U.S. smartphone market share stats, but it’s still interesting to check in with them every now and then to see where each platform and manufacturer stands. It’s kind of crazy how Android/iOS and Apple/Samsung are dominating their respective markets, and it makes you wonder exactly what it will take for another platform or company to turn either race into one of the three-horse variety.
